Hyperhidrosis Fact: “Everybody Has Some Kind of Baggage”
By Charmaine · on January 11, 2011I was puttering around in my kitchen over Christmas break while my two girls were watching Disney Channel’s newest show, “Shake It Up”. Contrived, badly acted (sorry), predictable, with only about 5 episodes in constant rotation, this latest offering from Disney Channel seems to be reinforcing my opinion that the execs at that network seem to think kids are stupid. If you have school-aged children, surely you know what I mean (Suite Life On Deck submarine episode hello!).
The episode below snagged my attention, however, when I heard this dialogue exchange: “I didn’t want anyone to know… Because people can be mean. Especially when they find out you have some weird disorder.” They were talking about dyslexia, actually, but so many of the feelings echo what most of us feel about having hyperhidrosis… and how hard it is to get those close to us to understand how difficult it is to be “different”.
I recommend you fast forward to the scene where the girls are sitting on the front stoop:
Everyone has something. If you have hyperhidrosis, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You did not choose this, you can control it to some degree, and most importantly, you are not alone. Life is short and don’t let a disorder control your happiness!

My nephews were watching the same dumb show and I had the same thoughts about this very episode. However I missed the conversation on the steps. This flower pot just fell over in the middle of the night and woke me up to find your post. Usually this Is the hour I wake up spinning out about my condition for a while and have to pray to go back to sleep. This time I should be ok sooner. Thanks for posting that.
Monday an Internet friend is undergoing a new treatment for compensatory hyperhydros that relieved at least one man of the condition so far. I’ll update u on this later, but if you could keep him in your thoughts and prayers Monday it may help.
Hi Dan, Hope you have been ok. I saw this comment when I first woke up this morning and I want to thank you for starting my day out on such a positive note! Your comments mean a lot, truly. Funny how you noticed this episode as well! Hopefully some kid with HH saw it and was able to feel better about her/himself. Please let us know how your buddy does with that surgery– how potentially important it is for many people! Hugs, C
I really think the problem with hyperhidrosis is people don’t understand how it affects so many things in our lives. That is what makes it so hard. From writing, to socializing, to playing an instrument. That list goes on and on. When she said waking up everyday terrified, it hit me how well people with hh know that feeling. I would definatly wish my baggage was ‘big feet’ I know everyone has ‘something’ to deal with…but really the degree of how hard it makes your life varies a lot.
I completely agree, Amanda. Yes, do we ever know that feeling of “waking up terrified”! We would all like our baggage to be lighter– but I also would like to believe that heavier baggage makes you stronger. Now that I have the perspective of age, (it’s true!) I do understand that I have been tested all my life and I am a strong person. YOU are a strong person, Amanda, with tons of empathy for others; it is something I can see in you from how you respond to others here and on the FB page. HH is part of who you are and has molded you into that empathetic person and that is not a totally bad thing, is it? HUGS
@Dan-my prayers are with your friend.
@Amanda/charmaine.. I agree with you. my struggle with hh has been long and tiring. If I have a choice i rather have missing some fingers than to have HH…I have survived 37 years of embarrassment and discomfort, frustration and depression but these days I think is the worse since it affects my family since i have no job and can’t find job due to my hh.its a long story but luckily i had some savings so im hoping before all of it will be used up i can find a way to improve my condition enough for me to work again..if i can do this i think i can survive….
