PRODUCTS & CLOTHING
So, how do you begin most days? Do you stand in your closet trying to figure out what your “safest” options are to wear? If your answer is yes, then you need to keep reading!
Most of us who have Hyperhidrosis know what our parameters are when it comes to clothes. We know that our range of “safe” choices is narrow: Black conceals the sweat rings best, knit (sweater) fabrics often don’t “show”, cardigans, blazers, and jackets hide the problem while making you hotter, jeans are safe as long as they’re dark, etc. We know that wearing bright or mid-range colors in most fabrics is a risk. Many of us are also aware that in recent years there has been an influx of various high-tech fabrics that “wick away” sweat, supposedly keeping one cooler and drier. Most of them change color when wet, some blessedly do not.
Other than knowing what to stay away from and what is “safe” to wear, I never looked into what other options might be out there. Before my ETS surgery, I had to be really, really careful never to wear anything that would show sweat. Now, my risk of sweating and having it “show” are much lower– but believe me, I have been burned! Especially by Compensatory Sweating– having it show up in areas you least expect it, while wearing the “wrong” fabric and/or color. Oh, and at the most inconvenient times, like at the end of, say, a preschool recital. Are you cringing?
I thought when I decided to write about the topic of clothing options that I would briefly discuss the general rules I mentioned above– black and knit fabrics are safest, stay away from colors, keep a jacket handy. Well, I am happy to tell you that there is SO much more to it than that! I have so much information for you that I have broken it down into categories and subcategories: Undergarments, including Undershirts for Men and Undergarments for Women; Fabrics and Clothing, with Clothing for Men, and Clothing for Women; Footwear solutions, and more.
Aside from clothing and footwear, I also want to tell you about how you can avoid a sweating trigger: caffeine. If you have heard of 5 Hour Energy, you know it can help you get through that late afternoon slump. Did you know it comes in Decaf, so that you can still get that boost without worrying about triggering an episode?
I will tell you about companies that will sell you popular brands with dress shields discreetly sewn in the garments, as well as inovative new fabric treatments that conceal sweat almost entirely.
Seriously, you are no longer condemned to wear black for the rest of your life! Yippeee!
