Women’s Clothing for Hyperhidrosis

Ladies, some specific tips for you: good foundation wear, light layers, smart fabric choices.  Please refer to my page on Undergarments for Women to learn of the many, many choices you have to conceal and absorb your excessive perspiration.  These undergarment products just may enable you to wear whatever you want!

Light Layers– if you go to KleinertsShields.com (leading producers of clothing for Hyperhidrosis), you will find several different short-sleeve tops that have dress shields discreetly sewn in.  I have a couple and can tell you that the shields feel like little “pillows” and although some of the types of shields are slightly “crinkly” sounding when first put on, after about an hour any crinkling sound goes away and you forget you are even wearing dress shields.  You can choose various necklines and colors.  Be warned, though: read the washing instructions!  I did not, and washed my top and dried it normally and it shrunk, like, two sizes.  Ah, live and learn.  At least I get to warn you about it. :) So, if you wear a top with dress shields, you can go ahead and wear over it that bright blue cotton shirt which would normally be off-limits!

Fabric choices
– when you are shopping, just really pay attention to the fabric content.  I wasn’t kidding about the water-test I mentioned on the Clothing for Hyperhidrosis page.  If you have some bottled water with you, just do a quick, discreet check to see if the fabric changes color when wet.  You will be surprised with some of the polyester fabrics; water rolls right off a lot of them!  Make sure you read about polyester fabrics on the Clothing for Hyperhidrosis page.  Also, when I find something cute and water repellent, I will definitely tell you girls about it in my blog.  ***UPDATE ALERT!! See below for the CUTEST tops that won’t show sweat– Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati… I am very excited :)

Fabric Treatments– OK, this was an exciting discovery for me!  I found TWO different fabric treatments which help to conceal sweat that are being marketed right now.  One of them is from Kleinert’s, who as you know if you read this website, is the leading merchant for products and clothing for Hyperhidrosis.  They have a product they call Dry Defense (you may also see it referred to as Fabrapel), which they sell on their website, KleinertsShields.com, and also on another website of theirs, TheDryShield.com.  This product is a fabric treatment that claims to prevent moisture from reaching the outer side of fabric.  As a result, there should be no sweat marks, and water rolls off the outer surface. I ordered a pink cotton polo shirt with this treatment, and I must say, it really seems to work.  Moisture was absorbed on the underside, and did not show on the outer side.  The only slightly negative point to make here is that the product runs pretty small.  I tend to wear either a small or medium on top, depending on how the product runs.  Well, let me just advise you here that if you are on the fence, go bigger :) ! I have been in contact with Kleinert’s and as I test out more products– and the weather gets warmer– I will either update this page or let you know in the blog.  One thing I would really like to see is a wider range of colors and styles with the Dry Defense/Fabrapel treatment.  For now, you can get some great basic pieces, and the prices are extremely reasonable.

Sierra Trading PostThe other fabric treatment I found– quite by accident– is very similar to the Kleinert’s product.  This goes by the name 3XDry and comes from a company in Germany called Schoeller.  The claims of 3XDry technology is that the treatment absorbs moisture on the underside of the treated fabric and repels moisture on the outer side, resulting in “virtually” no sweat marks.  This technology has actually been embraced by the fly fishing equipment industry and is available through such “outdoor retailers” as Simm’s, Woolrich, and SierraTradingPost.com.  Of these retailers, only SierraTradingPost.com has a decent selection of 3XDry products for women.  The great thing about Sierra is that it is a clearinghouse and they carry a wide range of brands (some of them high-end) at incredible prices.  Most of the offerings with 3XDry are meant for hiking, golfing, tennis, etc… but you can find some nice things that can be considered casual wear.

If you have Compensatory Sweating from ETS and you sweat on the backs of your legs, I know that finding pants, skirts, or shorts that won’t “show” is really difficult.  I’m sure you have figured out that floaty skirts with Spanx or bike shorts underneath is a good option, and that dark jeans are usually safe.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful, though, if you could find a casual khaki or something treated with Dry Defense or 3XDry that you could just put on and feel confident in?  Unfortunately, those of us who have this problem are too embarrassed to be vocal about what we need, so there is not much out there.  SierraTradingPost.com has on occasion had a pair of hiking pants treated with 3XDry, but I have never seen my size available– as soon as I find some decent pants, believe me, I will shout about it in my blog!  Maybe we can talk our friends over at Kleinert’s into making pants treated with Dry Defense…?

For now, those are my ideas and “finds” for clothing for women with Hyperhidrosis.  Dressing to conceal Hyperhidrosis– and to be comfortable– has always been quite a challenge.  I do feel confident that our choices are expanding, and if we are smart about what to look for in fabric content, etc we can look and feel great in something other than black!

***NYLON MESH TOPS THAT ARE WATER REPELLENT, BREATHABLE AND BEAUTIFUL***

Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati is a lovely collection largely made of fine-gauge nylon mesh.  Water rolls right off of it and for the most part sweat won’t show.  I would suggest if your axillary hh or trunk hh is severe, that you always wear a cami underneath (this fabric is rather sheer, so I usually wear a cami with this fabric no matter what), and you should experiment if dress shields are necessary.  For the most part, though, I really believe these pieces will allow you to wear something pretty—AND NOT BLACK– with confidence.   I am only recommending prints, to be safe….
