Hyperhidrosis Footwear
Looking for the best footwear options for your Hyperhidrosis all year round? Read on!
Footwear has always been tricky for me, and I’m pretty sure if you’re reading this you can relate! If you suffer from Primary Hyperhidrosis, chances are plantar sweating is involved and cannot specifically be eliminated by ETS. You may be aware that ETS surgeons claim that a number of patients do cease their plantar sweating as a byproduct of the surgery, and that’s great. I’m jealous! ‘Cause I am NOT one of those lucky soles…er, souls (sorry). Having had the ETS procedure, I can say that I am certain that I have less frequent episodes, and I can now enjoy pedicures (yay!!), but I can have a problem out of the blue (especially if it’s humid) just like before. So, I have to be careful.
fitFOAM by Adidas
One hot trend I didn’t dare buy into was the flip-flop. Do I need to even invoke the mental image of the sliding, slipping, obviousness of an HH episode in scanty flip-flops?? Ugh. Well, one day I discovered my ticket to Footwear Normalcy: fitFOAM by Adidas. I was in a sporting goods store, looking yearningly at the flip-flops, when I noticed some with a cushion-y, soft innersole. I thought, Hmmm, these might be safe (aren’t you always looking for “safe”?). I bought a pair, and they were so cushioned, incredibly soft & comfortable, and… ABSORBENT. Not probably what Adidas had in mind when they came out with fitFOAM (TM), but absorbent it most certainly is! Not only that, but when they get yucky, I can simply throw them in the wash under a normal cycle with a regular load of whatever, and they come out good as new (BTW, I have a front-loader, with no agitator to get the shoe snagged in, so do be aware of that possibility if you have a regular washer). They will air-dry beautifully in a few hours. I have 3 pairs and I looooove them. Have washed each pair dozens of times.
For women, they go by various names, including Koolvayuna as well as Ayuna. There is also a slide that uses fitFOAM that is available in both men’s and women’s styles. You will find them under various names, such as Trovao and Adissage. As you can see above, Amazon has just what I’m talking about. If you don’t see a style you love, just click on the style that is close to what you want (or on the fitFOAM by Adidas link) and you will land in Amazon’s site, and you can navigate in Amazon to search for just the thing you want– just be sure you see the word “fitFOAM”
in the product description!
Geox
When the temperatures heat up in the summertime, wearing any enclosed shoe can be torture on those of us with plantar sweating. Absorbent socks can help, but ventilation is usually a problem. While in conversation recently with the nurse of a doctor who treats Hyperhidrosis, she told me that one of their patients swears by Geox shoes. I knew the name, but not much else. When I did a search on Geox online, I read a review on EPinion.com that stated that these shoes were the answer to suffocating feet, due to the fact that the soles were specially constructed to let moisture out, but not back in. If you look at “My Picks” above, you can see two styles for women and two styles for men. There are hundreds more and if you click on any of the Geox styles above, you can browse around. I own two pairs, and I do love them. In fact, I wore my Geox sneakers on a 4-hour plane ride and my feet did not feel as though they were suffocating– amazing!
Summer Soles
Another (fashion) life-altering product I have discovered recently is Summer Soles. What a great idea! Summer Soles are absorbent, reusable innersoles that you can stick onto any shoe’s existing innersole. You simply cut them to fit your shoe, stick ‘em in, and you don’t have to worry about slipping and sliding out of your shoe. They are also soft and comfortable! The people who make these really know what we HH girls need: they need to do the job and look good. Therefore, they come in several colors, even a few patterns, and a suede finish too. So, they will look like they came “with” your sandal… but I also love them for when I want to go without socks in a regular shoe. Which is, like, almost every day (yeah, I know, I’m asking for trouble). Without Summer Soles, at some point in my day, I usually would get uncomfortable (in varying degrees) pretty much every time I went without socks. Seriously, unless it’s a baaad episode, I don’t feel sticky or sweaty any more in my shoes. I feel.. gosh, what’s the word? NORMAL. Normal is the Hyperhidrosis nirvana, is it not? No need for the guys to feel left out though; they make Summer Soles for men also. As you can see, two styles (of many) of Summer Soles are shown above and are available at Amazon.com. Clicking on either of these styles will bring you to Amazon, where you can find even more colors. Or, if you are at Drugstore.com and need some HH products there, such as antiperspirants, Decaf 5-Hour Energy, or Med e Tate Hyperhidrosis wipes, Drugstore.com and its sister site Beauty.com also sell a great selection of Summer Soles.
Slippers!
To close out my suggestions for footwear, if you’re looking for a good slipper and you want that good ol’ absorbancy quotient, steer yourself toward a terry cloth or chenille fabric (go for darker colors that don’t stain). The ever-popular (and expensive) Uggs are great but may warm your foot up a little too much. I have a pair of Uggs mocs and love them, but the fuzzy wool doesn’t absorb so much as “wick away” the moisture, and I sometimes find myself kicking them off (but they do dry off pretty quickly). Foot Petals has a gorgeous but pricey option called Spalux or Spa De Lux made with chenille, and as you can see, there are other absorbent options for both men and women below. The pink slipper with the dorky bow
is not the most stylish-looking thing I’ve ever seen, but I include it in my picks because it is made from bamboo, which is super-absorbent and anti-microbial, so it should really fit the bill. Unfortunately, it does not come in dark colors currently. Nearly everything below is washable!!
When you find something that you really like, you want to tell everyone about it. Well, I have never been able to tell anyone about these things!! Because nobody knew about my HH! Hopefully these little “finds” will make it a little easier to find comfort despite sometimes having sweaty feet. I really believe that when you have Hyperhidrosis– something that invades every aspect of your life– every little thing that helps to manage/control it/conceal it means sooooo much.
