Iontophoresis
A Great Treatment For Palmar/Plantar Hyperhidrosis! Read up– this can help…
Iontophoresis is the name of a treatment for Hyperhidrosis that is a bit unusual. It involves placing the hands or feet in shallow tubs of tap water that are hooked up to a device which sends a mild electrical current through the water. This current, somehow in conjunction with the minerals in the tap water, manages to temporarily plug the sweat glands. The exact way this is accomplished is a mystery. The efficacy rate is rather high, but the therapy does require training (if you choose to use it at home) and quite a lot of time. Because of how long treatments take, I would recommend finding a healthcare professional profficient in its use who would be willing to train you how to do this at home. Therapy needs to be administered every other day in the beginning for 20-40 minutes per session (that is if you are treating either hands or feet; double that if you want relief for both if you have one tray). You should be able to find an Iontophoresis device to rent in order to reduce the risk of purchasing something that does not work for you. Also, many health insurance plans will cover the cost of an Iontophoresis machine purchase or rental! Make sure you check your policy.
Iontophoresis has been a viable treatment option for people with Palmar and Plantar Hyperhidrosis since 1952. While of course the equipment has evolved, the method has remained virtually unchanged since that time. Iontophoresis is used to treat other medical conditions such as bursitis and tendinitis (in conjunction with medication), and is also used as a diagnostic tool for detecting cystic fibrosis.
Years ago, when I first found out that my propensity to sweat had a name, I set out to explore every possible treatment option. Not surprisingly, my research took the form of Internet searches. When I first came across Iontophoresis, I was completely turned off. Stick my hands in electrified water?? It seemed ridiculous and desperate, and the only information I could find on it came from the sites that were trying to sell the devices. In fact, most of the only information on any treatment for HH came from merchants or doctors hawking their own services and products. If I had been lucky enough to find a doctor who could administer Iontophoresis or who could at least explain how it worked and tell me that it could work for me, I probably would have tried it.
Perhaps I could have seen for myself that Iontophoresis can produce results. As I mentioned, this method is time consuming: 20-40 minute sessions every other day for 6-12 days before relief is seen. After that, you do maintenance, which ranges from once every one to four weeks. However, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, this time investment can pay off: Iontophoresis enjoys an 83% success rate. Doesn’t seem so ridiculous or desperate anymore…
